AGE OF REPTILES Philosophy and Mission Statement
AGE OF REPTILES is a veterinarian-owned and operated educational reptile exhibit whose purpose is to portray reptiles in a realistic manner by educating the public on the ecological value of reptiles in their natural habitat. Our goal is to instill a sense of appreciation for these unique animals in the viewers that visit our display. We are not a sensationalistic carnival side show that exploits the fears of an uninformed public by portraying reptiles as bloodthirsty mankillers. We have no venomous or "dangerous" animals.
Our message is one of conservation. The Age of Reptiles is an often-used synonym for the Mesozoic Era, a 170 million year period in the earth's history during which reptiles arose, flourished, and became the dominant vertebrate life forms. Although the dinosaurs were the most well-known, all of todays reptiles also arose during the Mesozoic Era and were contemporaries of the dinosaurs. Sixty million years ago an extinction event ended the Mesozoic Era. Modern reptiles and mammals survived, but the dinosaurs were lost, along with much of the other fauna and flora that developed up until that time. Several million years ago the human race appeared, and in the last several centuries, became the dominant vertebrate life form. Our occupation of vast areas of the planet has resulted in the loss of many wild areas and much of the earth's irreplaceable biota. Scientists recognize that we are causing another extinction event that promises to make the earth at least as uninhabitable as a large meteor did at the end of the Mesozoic. With that said, our message is also one of hope. Our name reflects an era in which not just reptiles, but a gloriously diverse panorama of life flourished that was beyond anything that ever existed on earth either before or since. As our sunny green globe continues on it's endless journey through the void of eternal darkness and forbidding cold of space, we are hopeful that humankind will develop a perspective of the value of all life on earth, and will take steps to preserve what is now here and has been here eons before we were even a thought. Our mission is to facilitate this process through education and awareness so that in the future humankind can herald in a new "Age " in which all lifeforms are valued and allowed to thrive.
AGE OF REPTILES opposes the commercial exploitation of wild reptiles and all other wildlife. Nearly all of the reptiles owned by Age of Reptiles have been bred in captivity from lines that have been well-established in herpetoculture for many decades and generations, and are not, and never have been, wildlife. Some of the other reptiles were surrendered to us by former owners after they elected not to pursue medical care for the life-threatening illnesses these animals developed from lack of the specialized care these animals require. Following medical care and rehabilitation, we incorporated these animals into our display where they serve as ambassadors of their kind. Our reptiles are always in flawless physical condition and are humanely treated at all times.
