Port Mahon Marginalia
Skallavir Attacks Port Mahon
Four Skallavir longships, each carrying between twenty-five and fifty
warriors, beached near Port Mahon. Two more longships did not commit to the
fight and remained anchored off shore. The raiders tried to capture a
Calahornian merchanter that was drawn ashore for unloading. The citizens of Port
Mahon rescued the merchants and their goods from the marauders, but were unable
to save the ship.
The Skallavir attacked Port Mahon itself, and were driven off in heavy
fighting. The garrison defended the walls of the new palisade, while the
citizen adventurers held the gate. The Skallavir suffered severe casualties,
while there were none among either the garrison or the citizenry, a tribute to
strong walls and superior skill at arms. Other Skall raids against the outlying
farms met with similar, and equally successful, resistance. Only one farm was
fired, but the blaze was extinguished before the building was consumed.
While the Skallavir were rampaging through the surrounding countryside
searching for valuables to carry off, Belisarius and Fekesh, two members of the
Cuisinart Corps, snuck out to the beached longships and burned three of them.
They took the oars, steering oar, and sails from the fourth ship so that the
returning Skalls would have their escape cut off.
The two ships that were anchored off shore came to the aid of their stranded
comrades and towed the disabled ship out to sea. Without steering oar and sails
it was undoubtedly soon lost at sea with all aboard.
Some Skalls failed to return to the disabled ship, so they remain in the
area. Like the orcs, goblins, and other monsters, they are now a hazard to be
eliminated so that Port Mahon can expand.

Good Kern Pod Weather
The early spring has been good for the Kern Pods, at least according to
Juvenal Bosca, one of the woodsmen that earns his living by gathering the pods.
The plants have leafed out already, a sign that indicates that this years
harvest should be heavier than last.
Where there are Kern Pods, there are smugglers. Commander Julius Castor has
stated that if the number of Kern Pods sold does not at least match last years
numbers, the reward for the capture of the smugglers will increase.
Once they left the Great Orc territory, the adventurers were attacked on
sight by orcs armed with metal weapons. Superior numbers and fighting skill
eventually prevailed, the Severed Head Orc tribe was decimated and Brand was
captured and returned to Port Mahon.

Margin Notes: an Editorial
As everyone knows, the Pragmatic Empire and Skallavir are at war. There has
been no word of any battles elsewhere in the Empire. Port Mahon was attacked
with disastrous results for the attackers. The eighty pikemen of the garrison,
and the double handful of citizen adventurers proved to be enough to beat off a
force of considerably higher numbers. I mean no insult to the skill and courage
of Port Mahon's defenders, but the Skall were not using the sound tactics that
they have developed in their centuries of raiding.
Nor were they using the strategy that Bjorn Lanssen, the terror of the
Northern Seas, should be using. Port Mahon is not a wealthy target, filled with
important nobles that can scream for Imperial protection -- and get it. Nor are
we a military target, no warships call this port home, and the two understrength
companies of the 24th Gemarnian are easily ignorable. There was no reason for
them to come here, 3000 miles from their home, 1000 miles from the nearest
target of importance.
Yet here they were. Why?
