Port Mahon Marginalia
Guard Commander Poisoned
Commander Junius Octo Castor, the commander of the garrison in Port Mahon
was killed twice over by some unknown person. He was found in his own barracks
with a dagger in his back. Moreland Kraft of the Knights of Justice revived him
with a Wellspring of Life, but he succumbed again to a spiritual poison that had
coated the dagger. Allister of the Black Company, cured him of the poison so
that he could be successfully revived.
A note was found on his body. It read:
"Lay off the smugglers. The entire town could be in danger. You
have no idea how few people in your own little city that would be on your side
if it got ugly."
The identity of the attackers is currently unknown. Several ships were in
port, so he could have been a stranger to town, rather than a resident.
Hopefully, he got aboard one of the ships and has left the area permanently, as
someone crazy enough to kill a man with an entire garrison of pike-men at his
command is not an asset to town.
Pursuit of the smugglers will undoubtedly increase, as the Imperial Army is
unlikely to ignore either the treasonous activities of the smugglers or the
cowardly attack on the commander.
Explosion in Port Mahon
Last Mad Moon, an explosion rocked Port Mahon, causing several near
fatalities. Quick action on the part of nearby residents prevented the
fatalities from becoming permanent.
The cause of the explosion was a box owned by Darius Blackwing, a newcomer
to Port Mahon. Earlier that morning, the box had been found by a farmer and
sold to Darius. An examination of the box revealed that it would be hazardous
to dispell the magical field around the box, however curiosity overcame good
sense and he hired Fekkesh of the Cuisinart Corps to cast the spell. The
resulting explosion was powerful enough to disrupt a card game on the other side
of the town. People unhappy with their near death experience were rumored to be
interested in revenge. It is hoped that they will refrain, as no permanent
damage resulted.
Willard's Luck Lost in Storm
The foul weather that we have been experiencing has affected the shipping to
Port Mahon. The Willard's Luck, a capable merchanter, was making a
run to Port Mahon during the December-January gap where no Imperial packet is
scheduled. She never arrived.
A week after she was due, the garrison sent out a search party to see if any
survivors could be located. They found no signs that anyone had reached shore.
It was assumed that she broke apart in one of the fierce storms that have been
battering the coast.
One of the explorers that comes into town occasionally, Downwind Sulla,
reported seeing flotsam that could be the remains of the Willard's Luck, washing
onto shore near Hullbreaker Point, about 40 miles south of Port Mahon, a two day
journey away.
She was planning on carrying a cargo of luxury goods and making stops at the
island garrisons before reaching Port Mahon, and then returning to Karnatic
Sands.
Orc Tourney Resounding Success
During the Mad Moon of last October, the Black Company carried an invitation
to a tournament to one of the Great Orc encampments. There had been trouble
with Great Orcs from that tribe, especially the younger ones. It was hoped that
a show of the human's fighting abilities would discourage the Orcs from breaking
the treaties negotiated with them.
At the tourney, there were some difficulties, as many of the human
at-tendees were unable to damage the Orcs with their weapons. However the few
that could, most notably the Black Com-pany, displayed sufficient skill that it
is unlikely the Great Orcs will trouble the human settlements for a while.
Allister of the Black Company bested a Great Orc noble, which should give any
restless young Orcs something to consider.

Margin Notes: an Editorial
A large number of thieves have started operating in Port Mahon. Items have
disappeared while their owners backs were turned, only to be seen later in the
possession of someone else. There is no civil law in Port Mahon, so there is no
constabulary such as can be found in cities and towns of the Imperium. Certain
people might think that means there is nothing stopping them from stealing, but
they would be wrong. The laws of human decency still exist. Treat other
people as you would wish to be treated.
A question for the thieves -- Would you like to see the money or
pos-sessions you have worked hard or risked much to gain vanish into someone
else's pouches?
If that is not of concern to you, perhaps you might pause to consider that
there is nothing keeping your vic-tim from extracting whatever rude jus-tice he
sees fit. The same lawlessness that favors your thievery also favors his
vengeance. Perhaps he simply wishes recompense, and a 'fine' for his troubles.
You might consider that risk worth the gains. But what if he is from one of the
less civilized coun-tries and death is the only satisfactory repayment? If you
were expecting protection from the garrison, you made a grave error. The
soldiers are here to safeguard the town and the kern pod trade, not the
citizens.
It is time for a government to form in Port Mahon. We need to stop the
lawlessness before it becomes open conflict in the streets.

Goblin Treaty
Commander Junius Octo Castor has signed a treaty with the Stone Gate
goblins. The treaty is of mutual non-aggression, the goblins agree to not
rampage through Port Mahon and all loyal citizens of the Empire will refrain
from attacking the goblin's lair.
The Stone Gate goblins live in the Hellenic ruins that have so far stymied
both the Black Company and the Cuisinart Corps' attempts to gain entrance.
