Port Mahon Marginalia
Hard Winter in Port Mahon
The winter has been cold and monotonous here in Port Ma-hon. It has snowed
daily for the past several weeks, sometimes reaching a depth of four inches or
more. The storms are endless, and I tire of digging through the snow to reach
everything. Winter entertainment consists of watching the spray freeze as it
breaks over the shore. I find myself looking forward to the diversion that the
Mad Moon provides. New people arriving with the monthly packet would be welcome
indeed. I am told by the people who have been here through many winters that
this one is unusually cold and wet, but that may just be the "old timers"
kidding the newcomer.
Goblins in Town
There has been unusually large numbers of Goblins in and around Port Mahon.
Apparently they are doing nothing more than trying to stay warm and begging for
whatever food can be spared. They starve to death, more often than not, and
their bodies become something else to be moved along with the snow. If this
continues throughout the winter, there will no longer be any gob-lins in the
Port Mahon area. This is not good news for the merchants that have profited
from trade with them, or the adventurers that hunt them. Perhaps human settlers
will move into the area with the elimination of that monster threat.
Mad Moons
Another unfortunate side effect of the weather is the Scholars who can
predict the Mad Moons have not been able to study the skies to determine when
the more distant future Mad Moons will be. (I have not seen anything in the sky
but clouds for so long I have forgotten what the sun looks like.) They have had
to rely on portents, which I am told is dependable only for the next couple of
months, beyond that the dates are subject to change.
I hope that the next issue of Marginalia will be able to include definite
dates through summer. If you don't care for the excitement of the Mad Moons,
you are now warned when to stay safely barricaded in your rooms. If, however,
you crave something other than the monotony of daily living, I will see you
then.
