Geographical Features Around Port Mahon
The geography of the Port Mahon area has several notable features, many of
them important to the Empire. The first definitive discussion on the
denizensof the Port Mahon region was
prepared by noted scholar Marcellus Octavius, during his shipwreck in the
region.
Western Reaches Ocean
In many ways, the Western Reaches Ocean defines Port Mahon. While the
harbor in Port Mahon is reasonably deep, there is no natural breakwater, one of
the reasons why the Port is usually closed to traffic for one or two months
every winter. At the latitude of Port Mahon, the water is warm enough to
bathe in, and there appears to be rich fishing a third of a day's sail out from
the short. No doubt, one of the reasons why the Hellenic Empire valued this
area highly.
Karnatic Sands
The Imperial city of Karnatic Sands is the closest Imperial outpost to Port
Mahon, and the garrison that defends Port Mahon, and its kern pod trade.
Karnatic Sands used to be a fishing community, but now serves primarily as the
trading junction between Testudopolis and her farther flung outreaches.
Karnatic Sands does make some of the finer glassware in the Empire, having both
seams of coal and limestone to work with, and an abundance of sand.
The current ruler of Karnatic Sands is Baron Jamelus Macius Cicero, a quiet
and gentle man whose gracius patronage of the arts, and generous support of the
80th Regiment bring civilization to all of the Western Marches of the Pragmatic
Empire.
Smuggler's Cove
Perhaps the best natural harbor on the eastern face of the Helles landmass,
the breakwater of Smuggler's Cove keeps ships there sheltered in the toughest of
storms. The relatively shallow draft of the water, and the lack of a drinkable
freshwater spring within miles of the place are listed in the original surveys
of this landmass done for Her Majesty, Cordelia. It should be noted that
neither of these flaws keep the smugglers from using it as a safe berth.
Hullbreaker Point
Just to the south of smuggler's cove is the broken escarpment of granite,
basalt and glass known as Hullbreakerhullbreaker point. The pirates and
smugglers have mapped out several safe courses through the treacherous currents.
Imperial attempts to do so have all met with disaster, with the few survivors
telling of monsters that stride out of the sea.
The Black Forest
The Black Forest is a place of fell enchantment, and tainted with the
darkest of necromancies. Because of the priority that the Empire places on the
safety of Port Mahon, and guarenteeing the kern pod trade, eliminating the
threat of the Black Forest is of paramount importance to His Majesty, and His
Majesty's Engineering Regiment. Plans are currently underway to build a good
road through the forest, and to find some way of neutralizing its effects.
The Black River
The Flumens Negros is the largest freshwater stream running past Port Mahon,
and many of the wells that draw water in Port Mahon are pulling in underground
tributaries of this stream. Named both because it originates in the Black
Forest, and for the fine black sand at the bottom, it tends to swell its banks
when both Mad Moons are in the sky, and the tides rise to unprecedented levels.
Procuring another valid source of fresh water will become a concern for Port
Mahon if it's to continue its growth.
The Valdai Hills
Forming the northern border of human occupied lands on the Helles landmass,
the Valdai hills are populated by Dragonfolk, the occasional Troll, bands of
Ogres and anything that preys on the above. Occasionally, Goblins or Orcs will
come down from the hills with lumps of mystic metals to barter or trade,
inevitably sparking a metals rush of those Humans whose greed exceeds their
sense. very few of the people running to establish their fortunes in the Valdai
Hills ever return.
Recently, an Imperial renegade, Brand the Curt, was retrieved from beyond
the hills, where his arming and leadership of the Severed Heads Orc Tribe was
causing a problem for the Empire. Lucius Grimes, Commissioner on Imperial Lands, serving under the Auspices of His Most Gracious Excellency, Jamelus Macius Cicero, Baron of Karnatic Sands , Lord of the Western Oceans, Faithful Servant to His Pragmatic Majesty, Trajan II.
