This may very well be the last update. I have everything ready to go and will be heading up to Black River Falls, WI on Friday to start setting up the course. You can still reach me via email until Friday morning if you have any last minute questions. Otherwise, you can call the Best Western in Black River Falls starting Friday night. Also, if you attend the Badger Orienteering event on Saturday, I'll be there all day. Feel free to ask questions then, especially if you have map and compass questions or are unfamiliar with orienteering maps.
The turnout for the event is less than usual. There are currently 15 teams registered. The weather looks to be cooperating. They are forecasting a high around 57 with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. I think you will find that the time will pass quickly in this event, since there are different sections. And with luck, you'll be finding markers in a relatively short period of time. The area is hilly, so expect a good workout.
Thanks for supporting this race and I hope you have a great time this weekend!
As usual at this time, I have been putting in a lot of hours on last minute preparations. After a final visit to the area this weekend, and a few minor adjustments, I have everything set to go.
The race will have 5 section, aerial, line orienteering, GPS, orienteering and land nav(USGS). There will also be some trail running. There are 31 points. At each point there will be an orange and white marker with a punch. You will carry a punchcard with you at all times and punch in at each marker you find to verify the ones you found. If you are unfamiliar with doing this, you can practice prior to starting on Sunday. Markers are numbered, in order, 1-31.
Throughout the event you will be able to use a compass. Other than that you can use the aerial on the aerial section, the line O map on the line O section, the GPS unit on the GPS section and the USGS on the land nav. You can not use other maps or aides except for a compass and aide just mentioned on any section.
For the aerial section you will be given an aerial with locations marked on it. You will have to locate each point. You will have a trail run to the starting point. At the end of the aerial section, at the last aerial marker, you will start a short line orienteering course.
Line orienteering is where you have a map with a line drawn on it. You have to follow the line until you find a marker. You will continue doing this until you find all 3 markers. At the third marker you will take a compass bearing and head back to the start area. The bearing will be given to you on your clue sheet.
Following the line can be difficult. Try to follow the hills and stay on the correct side of things, so that you don't accidently walk past a marker without seeing it.
Once you return to the start area, you will begin the GPS section. You will be given coordinates, latitude and longitude, and will use them to find 4 points. Along the way you will have to solve a puzzle in order to find the last point. You may want to get the coordinates of the starting point, so you know where to go to get back, once you find the 4th(and last) point. Also, there will be a cache at each marker. One bonus point will be awarded to all teams that find all 4 caches. I'll say more about this on Sunday. Caches can be hidden in tree trunks, up in trees, under rocks, or may be very obvious. The will be within 20 meters of the marker. Also, bring a pen or pencil for solving the puzzle.
I will have 2 GPS units available for teams to use. If there are more teams that need to borrow a unit, I will have some teams do the course in a slightly different order, so that more teams can borrow the units.
After the GPS section, there will be a trail run to the orienteering section. Once you complete the orienteering portion, return to the start triangle to get a split and then return to the start area by running the trail back.
The final section will be to find markers using a USGS map. This map is less detailed than an orienteering map, and the controls are generally hung on more obvious features.
All maps will run if they get wet. Keep your maps and aerial dry! I will provide a plastic cover, but it won't be sealed. Just be aware of it and you should be fine.
Bring water and food. You will have access to you cars a number of times during the event. I don't know if the water pump at the start area is currently working.
If you miss any markers along the way, it is not a problem. It will effect your overall score, but you won't be disqualified. However, the event has a 5 hour time limit. Anyone who finishes after the time limit will lose 1 point per minute late(1 second late is -1, 1 minute and 1 sec late is -2 points, etc.). Each marker is worth 1 point.
Directions to the start area.....I-94 to the Millston exit which is Hwy O. Go north less than .5 miles to Settlement Rd. Turn left and follow Settlement Rd. After you go over a hill and down the other side you will see a parking area on the left. It is about 5 miles from the interstate. The race will start at 10am. I will be there between 8 and 9am. If you need to borrow a GPS unit show up early, so we can show you how to use one. We'll have a short pre-race talk at 9:30am for last minute questions and to review all the procedures for the race.
On Saturday there is a Badger Orienteering event. You are welcome to participate in that event. It is in the same general area and will be helpful in getting to know the terrain. The cost is $10 for non-members. The course on Saturday is mostly in a different part of the map, than where you will be on Sunday. If you aren't there Saturday it won't be a great disadvantage.
I will be at the Best Western Motel in Black River Falls, WI all weekend(orange moose at exit). If you want to stop by or call and ask questions feel free. Or if you come up Saturday, stop by and say hello.
Well, I'm back from Guatemala and I'm tying up the loose ends for the race, March 25th. It looks like there will be T-shirts for everyone.
I will making a final check of the course this weekend and will post a description of the course Sunday night or Monday. At that time, I will describe each leg of the race telling you what you'll need to do, and what you aren't permitted to do.
Hello racers,
This year will mark the Return of the Boar. This race will change in format to a race based on using various tools to navigate. It will be done on foot and will not require the use of a bike or canoe. It will be a no frills race.
You can expect a challenging race which will be a good test of how good you are with a map and compass or other tools. It will be in a beautiful area and will be physically tough. The format will be a 5 hour score event where everyone finishes at the same time.
The date for the race is March 25, 2007 at 10AM. It will cost $65/person and will be a 2-person team race(Coed, MM, FF). There will be a $10 late fee per person for entries received after March 10th. Teams wishing to compete as a 4some may do so by registering as 2 2-person teams. I have no rules against teams working together, but following is not allowed.
Team info and registration money should be sent to:
Kevin Teschendorf
210 Van Deusen St. #2
Madison, WI 53715
Make checks payable to Kevin Teschendorf.
The race will be held not too far from Millston, WI in the Black River State Forest. I will send directions to racers the week before the race. The race will a series of loops starting from the parking area, so you will have access to your cars/equipment a number of times during the race. So, you won't have to carry large amounts of water or food. My guess is you may go about 2 hours at one or 2 points without returning to your vehicles. Some of you will take a little longer and others won't take that long.
The following will be parts of the race....navigating using an aerial(no scale given), navigating using a traditional orienteering map(5 color, 1-10,000 scale), navigating using a USGS topo(I call this land nav) and navigating using a GPS unit. There will be some trail running, as well. And I am planning a couple of other navigation exercises for you to complete. I may tell you about them in a future update, or I may wait until race day.
The GPS section will be set up like a geocache. You will have to solve a puzzle or two along the way to get to your final destination to complete that portion of the event. The intention of this leg of the race is to demonstrate how different it is trying to navigate with an electronic device and not using a map. An orienteering map shows all sorts of details like trails, hills, etc., but while geocaching you will only have your GPS unit as a guide, no maps(Race Rule #1).
Given the layout of the course, it should be possible for 3-4 teams to use one GPS unit by doing the GPS loop at different times. So, if you know another team that is racing, you could both use the same GPS unit. This might help you out if you don't have a unit. It will be possible to skip the GPS loop if getting a unit is a problem or your religion forbids it. I MAY have a loaner available.
I have ordered a small supply of T-Shirts which will be given out on a first registered/first served basis. Send your shirt size with your registration.
I'll be staying at the Best Western in Black River Falls. At the moment they have $45 rooms. The motel has a hot tub, swimming pool, workout room and a decent breakfast. It's about 15 miles from the event site. So, if you're coming up the night before, this is one option.
P.S. I will be out of the country until March 11th. I most likely will not have access to email for days at a time, so either contact me in the next couple of weeks, or wait until after March 11th if you have questions about the event. I'll do my best to communicate prior to that, but can't make any promises.
If you have questions, you can contact me at kevin@chorus.net
