Map and Compass Clinic

Update 12/25/4

Map and Compass Clinic Dates for 2005

I currently do not have any clinics scheduled for 2005. If you are interested in a clinic contact me. If there is sufficient interest, I may decide to schedule one. You can read below to see what was offered in the clinics held previously.

Hello fellow adventure racers!

I have decided to offer you the chance to improve your map and compass skills. I will be holding a map and compass clinic on the dates listed in the schedule in the toolbar.

I have been contacted numerous times by adventure racers looking to improve their navigation skills. Many already have the physical talent it takes to compete, but the lack navigation skills necessary for a good finishing time. This clinic has been designed for those wishing to gain the knowledge needed to take the next step in becoming a good navigator. As usual, beginners and advanced adventure racers will benefit.

In this course I will discuss some basic navigation strategies and I will outline a plan of action that any navigator should have before going out on course.

Participants will have the opportunity to observe me as I navigate to a few points. And then you will be given the chance to try your skills on a short orienteering course. I will be available to answer any and all questions throughout the day.

Navigation is a skill that usually takes quite a bit of time to develop. It is like an artist learning brushstrokes, but then having to spend years to refine them. I will give you the tools you need to take the next step. It will still be necessary for you to practice your skills in order to improve them. The clinic will not transform you overnight from wandering aimlessly to beelining from point to point. But it will move you in that direction.

I will also have a discussion on different types of compasses and which you may want to consider using. Depending on participant's needs other topics may include pacing, magnetic declination, recovering from being lost and using teamwork to improve your chances for success.

My adventure racing experience has shown me that usually the navigation in those races is quite elementary. Walking the navigation sections accurately will likely put you quite high in the standings. The advantage you gain will astound you. You'll need other skills to put yourself at the top of the leader board. But without navigation skills, you'll not only find yourself back in the pack, but also not finishing races. Don't let this happen to you.

In order to provide a quality day and personal instruction, I have limited enrolment to 10 people.

Also, when signing up, please let me know where you now stand. Are you a novice wanting to learn the basics, an intermediate looking to move up to advanced, or advanced wanting to learn how to go faster and be more efficient? The course will be taught with you in mind.

In the future, I am considering offering a clinic for intermediate to advanced racers that already possess some navigation skills. There are many training exercises that can help you improve even more. And I have plenty of advice I would like give you. If anyone is interested in such a clinic, please let me know. If there is enough interest, I will design an advanced navigation clinic.

Who will the instructor be? Kevin Teschendorf
