Devil's Challenge 2005 Results

Hello racers!

I've got the raw, but very accurate results up. Let me know ASAP if you spot errors in the standings. These will become official in a few days. Lost and found items include: a small lock key with a blue plastic thing on it, a petzl headlamp(hope you don't claim that one!), and 1 black keifer backpack and a yellow waterbottle.

The race was won by Team Freespeed, Kyle Peters and Brian Pfister. They were leading after the orienteering section where they found all 13 markers in under 3 hours. 17 minutes back were David Frei and Charlie Shahbazian and 27 minutes back were the Newlyweds, Ryan and Karin Jennings. Team Freespeed built a 2 point lead on the bike section and then finished second in the canoe section to hold on for a 1 point victory, 24-23.

I was very happy with the day overall, though we had two racers that were injured. One cut his hand 5 minutes into the race and was forced to skip the bike section. The other was overcome by heat/dehydration. The last I heard both were doing well.

The race had a number of memorable moments. The start was from a beautiful overlook on the south bluff. The orienteering was pretty straightforward, but difficult for beginners due to the lack of trails. I hope you all enjoyed the valley on the bluff with all the moss and ferns.

This year's race had a lot of strategy involved. In the end most would probably agree that skipping the orienteering markers at the bottom of the bluff and spending more time on the biking would have netted a greater point total.

As usual, the biking section was hilly/tough and nobody came close to getting all of the markers. The mass canoe restart with fireworks, and the line of lit canoes snaking down the river at night were great viewing opportunities. And brats on the sandbar afterwards was fun, too!

Thanks to our sponsors again this year, Masterlock and Moosejaw. Please support those two companies with your patronage. Also, these events are not possible without the help of numerous volunteers. These include Dawn D., Ron R., Brent R., Rick S., Keith B., Nick R. and a few spectators at the canoe landing. : )

I hope you all enjoyed the event and that we'll see you at the next Wisconsin Adventure Racing Society event.

Scoring was as follows: I decided that there would be no late penalties on the orienteering section due to the unpredictable 2 mile+ bushwack. I also decide on a -1 penalty each 5 minutes or part thereof late after the bike section(ie 6 minutes late is -2, 14 is -3).
