What a great December day! Congratulations to Charlie S. for winning the coveted Wisconsin State Championship. Val T. from Lithuania and now living in the Chicago area had the fastest time of the day with Charlie(Kenosha) just 4 minutes behind. I finished 10 minutes behind the winner. See full results below.
Cathy Y. was meet director for this event. Mikhail P. from Chicago designed and hung the long course. Thank you very much to both of you! I ran the course first, so I could make any corrections if they were necessary. While on course I rehung #4 which was in a depression just north of where it was marked on my map. I then found that someone had taken marker #11 out of the reentrant and hung it on a tree using the punch instead of the string. I found it on my way to #12 after giving up looking for it. I hung it in the proper location and continued on course. So much for my chances of winning : (
It seemed people completing the courses had fun. Cathy had set up a short and medium course with some markers made out of milk jugs. The weather was about 50 degrees and overcast. Not bad for December : )
One of the hard parts of running these events is picking up controls after hanging them and spending all day running the event. This time however two groups of people showed up a bit late and agreed to pick up the markers as they went. Or so we thought... The first group came back with the milk jug markers, but not the regular ones. There was a misunderstanding. Then the other group came back and said someone had asked them to leave them up until they finished. Aaarg!!! It was rather comical, except that it meant Cathy and I were picking up controls in the dark. Night orienteering without a flashlight, maybe we have invented a new event? We didn't get them all, so Cathy will be making another trip out to the park. Thanks again Cathy!

This was the inaugural day of the Blue Mound map for a regular day event. The long course included pits, cliffs, a pond and very few opportunities to use trails. I thought the course would be challenging, but most people came back saying they didn't have too much trouble. I'm sure the open woods and high visibility had something to do with that.
The biggest problem of the day had to do with new people not being able to find the start area. We had an orange and white sign up, but those unfamiliar with the orienteering symbol didn't know to follow it. We met on Blue Mound Park Rd. which is in the park, but outside the park entrance. I hope we didn't disappoint too many people. A few did arrive late after finally finding us.
The weather? No need to even ask anymore. As usual, it was 70 degrees and sunny! Thank you John for helping me pick up the controls.

The weather was cool(50's) and sunny for this event. 58 people came out and enjoyed the challenging courses set by Alan. I didn't hear any stories of strange and interesting occurances on course. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Thank you Alan for setting up and taking down the course. Thank you Bob for helping pick up controls.

The 6th annual night orienteering event was a bit goofy this year. I had hoped to finish fieldchecking our new map at Blue Mound State Park but wasn't able to. I designed courses I thought would avoid the unmapped areas and keep people in areas that were mapped well enough not to cause confusion. For the beginner courses this proved to be the case. 4 groups went out and all came back in around 1.5 hours or less. They all seemed like they had a good time.
On the other hand....Only a two people were able to complete the long course. And there were complaints about how poor the map was. They seemed to like the area, but not the map in it's present state. Most of the participants had to come in before they finished, since time was getting late, and the park officially closes at 11pm.
Ah well, next year's event will be better, and hopefully there will be a better turnout as well.
Sorry for the very late posting of results. This is a combination of me being too busy and starting to burn out.

This was National Orienteering Day(NOD). We had overcast skies, but no precipitation until all but the last few were out of the woods. For this event I used the brand new version of the map, and decided to test your advanced orienteering skills by taking the trails off the map. I heard a lot of positive feedback. Unfortunately there were a couple of misplaced markers. But in spite of this, I think people really enjoyed the afternoon in the park.

This was our 3rd annual scout event. We had a record turnout with 101 scouts and leaders participating. In spite of forcasts of rain, we had clear sunny skies and 50 degree weather. A flock of sandhill cranes flew over in formation while controls were being placed. The winning teams found 9 controls, so first, second and third place were decided by time. There was 1:07 separating the top three teams.
We also did a second short event called "bandit". Teams needed to punch at 5 controls, but had to watch out for bandits who would steal their punchcard.
This was the third time John S. has made this event so successful by working to inform the troops about the event and taking care of registration. This year he brought some orienteering exercises for people to do while they waited for the event to start. Thank you for your support!
After those events, the regular event was held at noon. Shortly after this started, the temperature dropped, the rain fell and shortly turned to snow. I was drenched, and so were a couple others who helped pick up controls. Thanks to Lee, Ron and Kevin for helping me.
If you had trouble finding one of the controls hung on a rootstock you weren't alone. One marker that should have been hung on a huge rootstock was actually hung about 100 meters to the south on a stump. Another marker was hung on a smaller rootstock that I didn't put on the map, but was near another large rootstock where I had intended to have the marker placed.

We had a brisk(30 deg), but sunny day for our annual championship event which was the combined work of a lot of people. Janne M. designed the courses just before he returned to Finland. Lenny S. hung the markers, as he did last year. And Cathy Y. ran registration. I(kevin) picked up most of the controls. A very special thanks again to Lenoid for hanging the controls! We had musketloader hunters sharing the woods with us, but that didn't cause problem. The long course was very challenging and fun for most people. We had a few people that got really frustrated when they couldn't find some of the markers. But markers were placed correctly and fairly. The one person who chose the intermediate course fell in some water up to her waist. Another didn't find the controls in order, thus shortening his race by about a mile. In orienteering we call that cheating! Someone else was so far off the map he stopped for a beer at a local establishment, before returning to complete his course. Two competitors were running with the sheep on someone's private property, since the map didn't designate the area as out of bounds. All in a day of orienteering...

Talk about a perfect night! The weather was perfect for running, around 60 degrees. The sky was clear and star filled. The moon was full. Sunspots a few days ago caused the northern lights to be quite visible and spectacular as it got later in the event. The mosquitos were present, but not a major pain. In other words, it was an exceptional night for orienteering.
I had had a very busy day. I had driven north of Green Bay to help some adventure racers set up the orienteering portion of their race. I then had to drive back to set up the markers for the night event, all told about 7 hours of driving. I had already hiked about 8 miles setting their course and now had another 3 miles to hang the controls. Later I tacked on 3 more miles picking them up.
After arriving I hung some direction signs to get people to the start area. I then ran the course to hang the markers. I drove off to Taco Bell for some quick food and water, since I was about to faint. And then waited for the first people to arrive. Lee and then two new people showed up, and I put them to work copying courses onto the maps. There was then a slow stream of cars arriving until dark. Heidi ran the course before dark in 43 minutes.
Finally at 9:15pm I started sending off the people I knew wouldn't be coming back. A few people were attempting their first night event and opted for the long course. I wished them well, asked if they had enough water, food and a tent for camping.... By 10:06 everyone was out on course and it was 25 minutes after that when first finisher came in. Then everyone else started trickling in. It was shortly after midnight when I was picking up the first few controls, that the last two groups came in. No one did the short course.
The map was brand spanking new. I barely was able to finish fieldchecking the area along the courses. There are other areas that still need improvements before we use the map next fall for a day event. When printing the map, my printer died and I wasn't about to use it to print the maps. I didn't hear any complaining about the map or forest conditions. It is relatively easy to move through the woods even at night. Mistakes were made at all but a couple of the controls. The two I had positioned on or near the trails were found without difficulty. Some made a wrong turn on the trail to the first control. Some overshot #2 and #3. The usual orienteering troubles. I felt good that mistakes were spread out between the controls. Everyone seemed to make a mistake or two, but they were at different controls. No one control was a problem.
There were two or three people that had flashlight problems. Svetlana's flashlight stopped working at the far end of the first part of the course. On her way back in she fell and then it worked again. So remember Night Orienteering tip #18, If your flashlight stops working, throw it on the ground in disgust.
Feedback after the race was good, and I felt good about the design. Thanks to Tom, David, Joe, Lee and Betsy who helped copy maps.
I hope that those people who tried it for the first time had a good time and will be back for more scary night orienteering at next year's 7th annual event. Thanks to everyone who came out.

This event was in honor of National Orienteering Day. We had a hot(80F) and sunny day with another large turnout. There were a few misplaced markers, but we were able to inform people about the correct positions before most of them went out. Feedback at the finish was very positive once again. Thanks to Lee T. for setting the courses, Dick for picking up controls and Cathy for running registration.

There were two events held at Magnolia Bluff, a scout score-O and a regular club event. Both of these went off well. The weather was sunny, windy and mid 50's. About 75 scouts and 12 leaders participated and from what I heard had a great time. We plan on hosting the 3rd annual scout event the last Saturday in March 2001. I had hung 17 controls and had a 45 minute time limit. The first scouts found 15 in just under 45 minutes. One group of leaders was able to get 16. One thing that was nice this year was the number of scout teams that were able to go out without the assistance of a leader. For many, the experience from last year gave them the confidence to tackle the course on their own. 25 teams particicated. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the punch cards and am therefore unable to post the results.
The regular club event featured a long course map with the trails and fields taken off. This made navigating around this small park more challenging. Since the map was small I had them do two loops. The course was relatively short, but hilly due to the bluff.
