Lapham Peak Event, November 7, 2009, meet director Brian M.

Wow! 60's in November for our last event of the year. This event was a late addition to the schedule and therefore the turnout was low. But those who did show up had a great time on a wonderful day.

This was the State championship event. Up until now we hadn't had time for one. A couple months ago Brian M. mentioned that he would be willing to set up an event. He decided on Glacial Blue Hills in West Bend. He also decided to have the long course be without trails to make it championship tough. It worked and we had a excellent course, like a mini Cat's Meow.

The long course was 4.5K and hilly. The woods were really pretty with all the leaves off the trees. kevin ran the course in 39:43 to take the state title. Scott B. was second in 51:14 an d Ryan J. was 3rd in 59:58.

Thanks to Brian M., Eric R. and kevin for control retrieval and of course, Brian M. for setting the whole thing up. It was his first time as event director.

Lapham Peak Event, October 3, 2009, meet director Lee T.

It was overcast and in the 50's. Rain was a threat that never materialized.

Lee T. continued his streak of setting up courses at Lapham Peak. This was his third or fourth year in a row. Thanks Lee.

There were two courses set, a 2.4K short and a 4.4K long. With 14 markers the long course was fast paced. You needed quick and accurate route choices. Any time spent standing around really hurt. Some had slower results than usual due to running the 10K race at the park in the morning.

Thanks to Brian M. and kevin(picked them up while running the course) for control retrieval.

Elver Park, 2009, meet director Susie M.

It was a beautiful morning, partly cloudy and warm. We had 41 participants, including about 20 children, from toddlers to teen.

Some folks decided one course was enough, but the majority completed both courses. Everyone had fun, and there seemd to be quite a bit of interest in future events!

Thanks to Shane H. and the Seeley Family for picking up the markers.

60 degrees, sunny, but still a bit cool with a chilly wind. 12 people participated and I think everyone enjoyed the day! It was perfect running weather.

The long course was a solid 6.5K. Carl S. showed up to claim 1st place with a nifty 57 minute run. Ian H. took 2nd in 64 minutes.

Thanks to Brian M. and MNOC who picked up the markers. It is really, no REALLY appreciated when people help pick up controls and don't you forget it!!! : )

Hepcat event, April 26, 2009, meet director kevin

HEPCAT! I loved terrain on the new map and the nice open woods on a lot of it. The weather did NOT cooperate, but it actually was a pretty cool day anyway. To start off it was really foggy and sprinkling a little bit. But I didn't get too wet setting up the courses. But by 11am the rain had pretty much stopped and it was nice, though cloudy and damp. At the end we got hit with a little more rain, but it wasn't bad. 27 people participated.

The long course was a middle distance of 4.6K with a long run out and in from the parking/start area. The first few markers were a bit easier, but after that there was more route choice and some tricky navigating. It wasn't super hard if you were careful. But if you weren't you could count on losing some time. Maricel O. from CAOC came back in 35:20, while east coast transplant Doug M. took second in 44:30. I didn't hear anything but nice comments about the courses/map.

Thanks to Brian M. who picked up the long course and Doug for snagging the short course. It is really, no REALLY appreciated when people help pick up controls and don't you forget it!!! : )

Gov. Nelson event, March 28, 2009, meet director kevin

Today it was overcast with temperatures around 30 degrees. The sandhill cranes were out in force. They could be seen walking in the field just 40 yards away and flying overhead. A redtailed hawk was building a nest in view, too. There were about 100 participants.

The scout event was first with a 50 minute score-O. We had one team get 11 markers in 50 minutes and 2 others got 9.

The regular event was also a score event.

Thanks to Brian M., Chris S., Dan, Chris and Cathy for helping pick up controls. Thanks to Chris D. for running registration for the scout event.

Cat's Pajamas Event, November 1, 2008, meet director kevin

Today was a beautiful day. The temperatures were in the 50's and it was mostly sunny. We had 77 participants.

This was the inaugural day on the Cat's Pajamas map. It was made last spring by Ivar Helgesen. It has some typical moraine terrain. But unlike the other maps has more flat areas, fields and pine plantations. If you like more of a variety of terrain on your course, this is the map for you.

Everything went according to plan. We had quite a few new people and gave a few beginner's clinics. Winning times were right where we wanted them. We had a special guest, Anna S., who came up from St. Louis, MO. She a member of the U.S. junior team and showed why by winning the long course.

However, more important is the top finisher from the state of Wisconsin, since this was the state championship event. For the first time in club history this honor went to a woman. Ioana S. edged out Charlie S. by 2 minutes to claim the title. Congratulations Ioana.

Thanks again to Brian M. for helping pick up controls and Lee T. for helping with registration. If you ever want to help out at an event, just ask. We almost always can use an extra person for starts, registration and control pick up. It's a great way to get to know people better.

Today was a beautiful day. The temperatures were in the 60's and it was mostly sunny. We had 74 participants.

It seemed like an orderly day at registration with people conveniently not all showing up at the same time.

Thanks again to Brian M. for helping pick up controls, Lee's friend for helping with registration and Lee T. for once again setting up the Lapham Peak event. I'm sure he's getting to know the park better than almost anyone else.

If you had trouble with #10(long course) you weren't alone. From time to time you get a misplaced control even though we do our best to not let this happen. That was the case for #10. Sorry about that....

Today was a beautiful day. The temperatures were in the 60's and it was partly sunny. A few threatening clouds passed by, but nothing serious.

Glacial Blue Hills Event May 3, 2008, meet director Ioana S.

The weather was supposed to be in the low 50's with a good chance for a little rain. But a cold front moved in and made it a bit chilly for standing around in. It was nice for hiking and running in the hilly West Bend park. 27 people turned out to participant.

There was only one course for this event, a long course with 19 controls. But the long course participants were required to do the course without a map. At each control they would find a small piece of the map which showed where the next control was. You would have to memorize the route before leaving.

Memory O is a good exercise for what you should be doing even when you have a map. You need to simplify the route you take and ignore lots of the details along the way. This exercise forces you to do that.

Thanks to Ioana S. and her friend for setting up the event and running registration. Also, thanks to Brian who hung around to help pick up controls. That kind of help is always greatly appreciated. : )

Ottawa Trails Event, April 20, 2008, meet director Ryan J.

We finally had some fortune with the weather. Temperatures were in the 60's and it was sunny. In fact, it was probably too warm. But we'll take it!

About 60 people showed up to enjoy the weather and some orienteering. The courses turned out to be too challenging. Times on both the long and the short courses were much longer than usual. Much of this was due to the prickly ash which has increased dramatically since the map was made. Many areas that were once very enjoyable to run in have become covered with the thorny trees. Unless there is improvement in the area, I suspect we will not be using it much in the future. While the terrain is very interesting, the thorns are a bit overwhelming. We have many other areas that are much more enjoyable and have much nicer forest.

Thanks to Ryan for setting up the event and running registration.

Cat's Agenda Event, March 29, 2008, meet director kevin

We've had a record year for snow in some places in Wisconsin. So, on this 40 degree day with sunshine it was still possible to run in the white stuff. It's becoming a Badger Club tradition. It was a beautiful day and the woods were a wintery wonderland. Some people were skiing the trails when I arrived early to set up the last few controls. Charlie S. ended up hanging them by skiing to the locations.

But the snow was only about ankle deep in most places, and early runners stayed on top of it. Later in the day it softened up which made running more difficult. The winning time was just under 10 min/K(42:06) and was posted by Maricel O. from CAOC. Scott B. appears to have stayed fit over the winter and logged a strong second place finish in 50:25. Charlie S. rounded out the top 3 with a 53:41.

Thanks to Charlie S. for hanging a few controls and Ivar H. for helping to pick up controls at the end.

Kellings Lakes Event, December 2, 2007, meet director Ryan J.

For the 4th year in a row we got hit with snow at our final event. There was no snow on Friday, but by Sunday we had 5 inches and it was drizzling. But the park had plowed the road we needed, and Ryan had set up some nice courses. Temperatures were just above freezing all day.

With many people anticipating bad driving conditions and lots of snow the turnout was quite small(19). But those who came had nothing but good things to say at the end of their runs. Kellings Lakes is indeed a very nice place for orienteering. And the courses offered a good challenge. The road, by the way, were in good driving condition for the most part.

Kevin picked up the coveted title of Wisconsin State Champion with a time of 61:20. Not far behind was Joe S., who made the trip up from Chicago. Anthony L. finished 3rd with what may be his best ever finish. Nice job Anthony!

But all this fun would not have been possible without a lot of hard work by Ryan J. who set up his first ever club event. Everyone seemed pleased with the results of his efforts. Not only did he set up the courses, but also took down most of the markers. Thank you Ryan!

Devil's Lake Event, November 3, 2007, meet director kevin

Writing only from rumors I heard....The weather was fantastic and we had a nice turnout. I set the courses, but was unable to be present, since I was competing at the U. S. Champs in Virginia. A team of others came together and took care of the day of the event work. Thanks to Lee T., Alan H., Ryan J. and anyone else who pitched in(I'd put your names up, but I don't know who you are.

From the course times I can see that the course was indeed tough. I'm sure times were also slower due to the often times rocky gound. I hope you enjoyed the challenge!

Blue Mound, Rich J. meet director

The weather was perfect for the event. It was sunny and cool. I think temperatures ended up in the 60's. We got our best turnout ever for a Blue Mound event with 76 people participating. They were treated to some interesting orienteering in some greener than usual forest. Everything went off without a hitch.

Thanks go to Rich J. for setting up the courses and running registration. Shane and Colleen picked up the long course controls, and Rachael helped with registration for a bit. Thank you for you support.

Cat's Agenda Event, kevin meet director

Today's event was the christening of our latest cat map, Cat's Agenda. This area across from Cat's Meow has a nice mix of trails, openings and wooded kettle moraine terrain. The long course was particularly challenging, with a variety of markers causing people problems.

I heard a lot of positive remarks about the new area, and would like to hear what you thought of it, as well. I felt the course was A-meet quality and the terrain is first class. You can tell good terrain from the results. The best people hold their own, but weaker orienteers fall back quite a bit. Some of the DNF's were from people who had to leave before they finished the course. It definitely was a good challenge and congratulations to all who found all the markers!

Maricel snuck in at the last minute and posted a 50:50 winning time. Marco was just a few minutes behind in 53:33.

Thanks to everyone who helped out. This would include Rich and Lee with registration, and Brian and Scott with control pick up. The temperatures were around 80 and mostly sunny. It rained lightly for a few minutes.

Devil's Lake Event, Alexei D. meet director

We had a nice 50 degree day with partly cloudy skies. This led to having a nice turnout of over 50 people. The heavy snowfall from earlier in the week left the course soggy and snowcovered. The fact that our Devil's Lake map is of high quality and in a beautiful area, also contributed to the good turnout.

Thanks to Alexei D. who hung the markers and picked up most of them, too. I picked up a few, too, as I ran the course.

It was Alexei's goodbye to the club, as he will be returning to his homeland, Latvia, shortly. Hopefully, we'll see him again at some orienteering event in Europe! After all, it's a small, small world.

Also, thanks to Rich J. who sat in at the finish area when we left to pick up controls. Even little jobs like that make our job of putting on these events a little easier. Staying late to help pick up a few controls is also greatly appreciated.

Indian Lake Event, March 31, 2006, Meet director Alan H.

This day we had our 9th annual scout event. It was the end of spring break and the forecast was for thunderstorms. This may have been the cause for the smaller than usual turnout. We still had about 50 participants.

The weather was threatening all day, but during the scout event it didn't rain. During the regular club event it rained sporatically, but the temperatures weren't bad if you were moving. The event was a score-O where participants had 1 hour to find as many of the 16 markers as possible. Most of the regular club members were able to get to all of them within the time limit.

Thanks to Alan H. for hanging and picking up the controls. Also thanks to John S. for taking care of publicity and registration for the scout event. Everything went very smoothly, as usual.

Wildcat Mound Event, meet director kevin

We christened our latest map at Wildcat Mound by holding a two day local event. The hope was to get a few more people to travel there, since it is fairly far away from our core of support in the Madison/Milwaukee areas. This strategy did get a few extra people who spent the night in Black River Falls and orienteered both days.

Attendance was 20 and 23 respectively, which is good considering the remote location. We drew people from Minnesota and Kansas. The weather was unseasonable warm with temperatures both days in the 70's. Add to that mostly sunny skies, beautiful forest and a new map, and you come up with a good time!

I didn't hear any major complains with the map. Overall, I think people found it to be an excellent area and a nice map. Participants were treated to great vistas from the top of the bluffs, where you could see in both directions for many miles.

I was please to find a few orienteers that were really happy to have a map a little closer to them than usual. This was one of the reasons I made the map in an area so far away from our base, to make it easier for some people to attend an event.

Thanks to Joe E. who helped me pick up markers on Day 1! Also, thank you to Lee T. for bringing water each day. And Lee T. and Cathy Y. for helping with registration on Day 2.

Cat's Meow, Dec 3 2006, Meet director Charlie S.

A few years back we had an event we fondly call the snow goose. It was held at Goose Lake and we got 8 inches of snow the night before the event. This was in the years of lower attendance, and that pretty much knocked everyone out. I was the only runner to complete the long course.

Well, now we have a snow cat. Roughly 8 inches of snow fell in the Northern Kettle Moraine Friday and made this event similar to the snow goose. 30 people showed up and loved the terrain, though some weren't as fond of the snow that covered it. Temperatures were on the cold side, with the high around 20 degrees. What happened to the warm temperatures of last weekend?

The courses were, of course, challenging. The fastest long course time(Joe S.) was over 1 hour. Afterwards, he said he'd had a pretty clean run and kept in contact with the map at all times. I finished in 70 minutes(while picking up the controls) to reclaim the state championship title. Thanks go out to Charlie S. for setting everything up and hanging around to pick up markers afterwards.

This ends the 2006 version of the club. It was a very good year, but next year has even more promise. Ya'll come back now, ya hear?

Glacial Blue Night O, meet director Rick S.

In an attempt to get more people we also opened this event up as a day event for those who are afraid of the dark. But as usual with late postings, this had little if any effect. Perhaps in the future we'll schedule a night event with a day event on the regular schedule.

The night O attracted people as far away as Lithuania. We had 13 participants, a common number for our night O events. The weather was pleasant and it was a very social event. Insects weren't a problem either.

Control pick up was smooth with Rich J. picking up markers as he went on loop 1 and Nic R. collecting loop 2 on his way around the course. Rick S. picked up the short course on his bike, and we were out of there by 11pm. Thanks to Rick S. for volunteering to set up the course, and Nick and Rich for picking up controls.

Cat's Meow Event, May 6 meet director Ioana S.

We had another fantastic day! The temperatures were about 60 and it was mostly sunny. We had a nice turnout of 48. The long course was fantastic. It may have been our most challenging course ever. There were very few catching features(features that help you know when you missed a marker). The woods overall were very nice.

The short course also posed some challenges, including a big depression on the last control.

A big thanks to Rich J., Drago and David R. for picking up all of the controls. Thanks to Lee T., Cathy Y., Rich J. and Ioana S. for helping with registration. And a special thanks to Ioana for making the long trip up to the northern kettle moraine state forest to set up and plan the courses.

Devil's Lake East, April 8, meet director kevin

Well, I missed this one. I set up the course, but had to teach a class right during the event. Skies were clear, cool and breezy. When I was vetting the course, things were much drier. The days before the event were filled with rain, which swelled the streams and marshes. On Friday night when I hung controls some of the trails were streams. This added to the beauty I thought but pretty much guaranteed wet feet and some tricky river crossings. The marsh to the north of the road was dry at the edges before the rain. Afterwards, you either had to go through bushes or get your feet wet. While vetting and then while hanging markers, I was able to find ways through the thicker, prickly stuff. From race day reports, it sounded like that was not true for everyone.

I set the course with more controls than I usually do. It was like a middle distance event with lots of short legs and quick decision making. But the winning time would seem to indicate a classic distance course. I'm sure times were slow due to stream crossings, rocky ground, brushy woods and some difficult control locations. I hope you enjoyed the challenge!

Cathy Y., Lee T. and Alan H. all helped out with registration and timing. Ioana and Dave S., Rick S. and team, Jeff P., Gil and nephew all helped with control retrieval. Thank you all very much!

ps Some of the non finishing long course people only had time to complete a portion of the long course. Thus their times aren't listed.

Elver Park, meet director Alan H. and John S.

Temperatures were below normal for this time of year. We usually get great weather and sunshine. But this year it was cloudy and cold for the annual scout event.

We had another nice turnout of 103 scouts and leaders. 8 troops participated and we had a very close race. In the end it was Team A(Carl Cortright, Eric Zimmerer) of Pack 302 taking home the blue ribbons with 20 points. The Troop 514 Monkeys(John Robinson, Kurt Bennett, Dalton Worley, Keneth Tesman, Joey Robinson, Zack Simonson) got second just 1:30 behind. And Troop 840 Team C(Cody Delucaux, Nathion, Korinek, Jermey Moroder, Matthew Tregs) finished a strong third with 19 points in 53:43.

As for the regular club event held at noon, we had a relatively small turnout with quite a few new faces. The event was exactly the same as the scout event, a 1 hour score event with 20 markers.

Thanks go out to Alan and John for setting up the course and handling scout registration, and Ryan J. and Rich J. for helping pick up markers.

Cat's Meow Event, Cathy Y. meet director

As usual the Wisconsin State Championship was eventful! To begin with, we had a new map in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. This small 1.2K square map was more than enough to challenge even the best orienteers. Just to make things harder we had 3 inches of snow fall the day before. This made the hilly terrain slippery and difficult to run in. But the scene was picturesque. White snow glistening off the trees, and hardly a footprint in the snow(prior to the event). The sun was out and there was little or no wind. The stage was set...

Unfortunately, we did have a few troubles this fine day. To begin with, I had three wrong control numbers in the clues on the Medium course. Needless to say, this caused many a young orienteer a lot of problems. And then, to make matters worse, we handed some of those maps to long course people. The end result was disappointment for quite a few people. Fortunately, for the long course people who got the right maps, everything was set up correctly.

Joe S. came up from the Chicago area and went home with an impressive 26 minute victory(70:40). However, given that he is not a Wisconsin resident, he is not eligible to be state champion. That honor goes to Ryan J. with a time of 96:25. Congratulations Ryan!

Feedback on the map was positive. I threw the map together pretty fast and it still needs some improvement. But overall it is still good. The map will be expanded in the future, and I hope to use the map twice a year.

Some people are listed in the Medium course even though they intended to do the long course. We did have their Medium course time and that was the best compromise given the situation. The day ended for me with a drive home at night looking at a crescent moon and a bright planet(Venus) positioned closely together.

Thanks to Lee T., Andy M. and Cathy Y. for helping with registration, and Brian and Rich for helping pick up markers.

Devil's Lake(south bluff) Event, Alan H. meet director

This event was the first club event held on the south bluff. We had a modest turnout of 50 for this event. The skies were overcast, but the rain held off until we were picking up controls. Temperatures were in the 50's. All in all a very nice day. Being fall meant we got free apples compliments of Lee T. Homegrown on his apple tree, those apples are sweet!

We had 3 courses set up for the day, a long, medium and short. The medium and short were very similar with the last couple of controls on the medium course a little harder than the short course controls. The long course went up on the south bluff, which required about a 300 foot climb during the race.

Being autumn most of the leaves had fallen off and the woods were very pretty. The long course had few trails. Once on the bluff there were no trails to follow or relocate from. Participants could use the top of a hill and some obvious reentrants in the big valley on the hill. But some of the legs offered little help in staying on course. Contouring and pace counting came in handy today.

Thanks to Alan for hanging and picking up the short course, vetting the long course and handling registration. Also, thank you to Lee T. who once again pitched in at registration.

Lapham Peak Event, Ioana I. meet director

Once again the weather cooperated with temperatures in the high 70's and sunny. 98 people participated and most of them checked in after finishing(remember to always check in when you are done). Maricel O.(CAOC) had a good run and edged out kevin by 2 minutes. The long course was honeysuckle filled which made running difficult at times. We ventured into some areas of the map we hadn't been to in quite a while. Some short legs kept us off the trails as much as possible.

Thanks to Ioana for designing and setting up the courses, and to Ioana, Dave and Dragos for picking up controls afterwards.

Eagle Nights Night Orienteering event, Giovanni and Katia meet directors

The weather was warm and unpredictable. There had been thunderstorms the previous days. But tonight there was to be no rain and we had a fun event!

There were 2 courses, but nobody selected the short course. Attendance was sparse meaning a lot of people missed a good time. : ( After meeting at the entrance to Picnic Point we proceded into the park to start the event. The long course had two loops of 11 controls that were forked in various locations. Everything ran smoothly and by about 11pm we were picking up markers and heading home!

Many thanks to Giovanni and Katia for setting up this event on a map that has their apartment on. They also picked up all the controls.

We had a seasonal and overcast day. It was a nice day for a run in a park.

We had 21 markers on a 5.6K course. The first 12 markers were on the north half of the park and were also the short course(2.7K).

It was a pretty routine day without any surprises.

Ottawa Trails, Bob F. meet director

Spring finally seemed to return with normal temperatures(45) for this time of year. It was brisk if you were standing around in your orienteering suit. But once you got moving, the temperature was fine.

It was an interesting event. First it appeared we'd have a small turnout due to the cool and windy weather. Only 5 groups had gone out by noon and the parking lot was pretty empty. But then people started to show up and before it was over it was getting difficult to find a parking space. Attendance was 72.

The long course appeared short at first glance, 5.3K, but the terrain is tricky and the prickly ash is thick. Times were quite slow because of that. The short course had a couple of tougher than usual markers at the end which slowed down alot of people on that course. Some people noticed the abundance of prickly ash. But there is no denying that the terrain is very interesting, and I think most everyone enjoyed their day in spite of their scratches.

Bob F. set up and designed the courses. He also picked up markers. If you didn't already, tell him thanks next time you see him. It was a fun event.

Devil's Lake Event, Alan H. meet director

We started this day with the 5th annual scout event. Our good omen sandhill cranes flew overhead as I was giving the pre race talk. The weather was 66 and sunny!

The short course completed a 1 hour score event, though many didn't realize the idea was to come back before the hour was up and ended up with negative points. The long course was both physically and technically challenging.

Many thanks to Alan for hanging the course, John S. for taking care of the scout registration, and Giovanni, Katia, Michael and Svein for helping pick up controls. : )

Bong Event, meet director Charlie S.

We started our season earlier than usual this year and were rewarded with unseasonably warm temperatures(high around 56 and sunny). There were three courses, a long course(10.6K), a middle distance(5.3K) and an easier 5.1K course. The 5.3K course was the second half of the long course(my splits were north half 35:57, south 35:28). Attendance was 72.

We had some good competition on the long course, where Michael E. had a fast run on what we knew would be a runner's course. Bong is flat and has numerous trails. Four minutes behind was Maricel O. who came up from the Chicago area. Overall the event ran smoothly and a good time was had by most. The courses were a bit soggy, as the snow was melting, but wasn't being absorbed by the ground. Trails were often muddy or snow covered. But it was quite nice running in the warm sunshine through the prairie grasses and around the ponds and marshes. Thanks go out to Charlie for hosting the event and Michael for picking up controls.

Wisconsin State Championship, Mauthe Lake Rec Area, meet director Cathy Y.

We enjoyed a cool and damp December day. The long course was especially tough, which was fitting for the state championship event. But it took its toll on a lot of less experienced orienteers. Overall the event and registration went smoothly, though due to the strong turnout, we ran out of preprinted maps and had to do some course drawing for the last few participants. What a nice problem to have! Attendance was 103.

Kevin retained his title as state champion with a time of 69:05 or 8:14 min/K. Many thanks to Cathy Y. and Rich J. who organized the event.

Devil's Lake Event, November 6 - meet director Dmitry P.

This was another classic Badger Orienteering Club weather day. Sunny and almost 60 degrees in November! Lapham Peak Event, October 2, meet director Rich J.

We had cool temperatures and clear skies for the Lapham Peak event, and a fantastic turnout for the orienteering activities.

A few people on the long course had trouble inverting contours in the northeast part of the map, as the area is well covered with hills and depressions. The markers most discussed seemed to be #4(which was also featured on the intermediate course) and #9. Number 4 was in a complex area but easily seen from above if you climbed beyond it and looked back. Number 9 had some thicker vegetation to confuse the approaches, and at least a couple people were looking for a nearby hill instead of a depression as an attack point. Also the concern of running off the map was mentioned by a couple of people. So - that was a good one!

Maricel Olaru had the best strategy for the long course, which was o finish twelve minutes faster than anybody else....

The Short course had mixed results. I set a couple of fairly difficult markers near the end, with the thought that after a few easy ones, people would find the more difficult ones as well. Many enjoyed the course difficulties, but we had a few non-finishers, too, which was not my intention. The good news is that many people who finished the short course went on to try at least a few markers on the intermediate course.

We had another fine group of participants for this event, and a lot of people helped state the meet: Dmitry P. - setup and starts; Dick B. - registration and start/finish; Michael E. - troubleshooting; Cathy Y. - registration, training, start/finish, results and control pickup. Many thanks to all, and to the park staff at Lapham Peak, as well. Rick J.

Kellings Lakes Event, June 12, event director Boyko

Recently we've been swamped with rain and rivers are overflowing. But for one day the rain stopped and we had a hot(78), humid and sunny day. Boyko had set up three courses, long, short and a jr. state champ course. But on this day no juniors showed up to vie for the crown.

The courses took their toll on a few competitors who gave in to the multitude of mosquitos that swarmed those unable to keep moving. But the few who stuck it out were treated to some very nice, though tough courses.

Glacial Blue Hills Event, May 1, event director kevin

Today was overcast and cool which made it good for running. I designed two short courses, but to make it more challenging I took the trails off the maps for the advanced course. Everything went smoothly. We completed the courses and control pickup by 4PM. Thanks to Michael, Boyko, Stoyan and Dick for helping pick up controls.

This was to be the last event of the Spring schedule, but Boyko has agreed to set up courses at Kellings Lakes in the middle of June. Watch the website for the exact date. That should be a nice event!

Bong Recreation Area Event April 3, 2004 meet director Ioana S.

We had an interesting day in our first day event at Bong State Recreation Area. In the morning, the sun was out and temperatures seemed quite nice. But by noon clouds had moved in and the wind was blustery. This didn't change anything as 55 people got out in the prairie for some fun orienteering.

To save paper I had printed the short course and the start of the long course on one sheet of paper(the long course needed two maps). While this was no problem for short course participants, it did cause quite a few long course runners to complete both the long and the short courses. If times on long seem extra long, it is probably due to this. I'll have to be a little more careful next time I do that!

Everyone should thank Ioana and her crew for getting this event set up. I printed the maps, but Ioana took care of everything else. They not only hung the courses, but took them down as well. Also thanks to Rich who picked up the short course markers.

The terrain was interesting. Bong is a big prairie and has quite a few marshes. However, it appears we have had quite a bit of rain lately, since there was a lot more water than I have seen in previous visits. I heard stories from a couple people who were up to their waist and even higher while on the short course! Hopefully, we didn't lose anyone out there! My experience on the long course was drier.

For those who arrive an hour or so early they were treated to seeing the area's finest attempt a rescue of 2 people whose boats had capsized on the lake. It looked like they had half a dozen ambulances, a couple of fire trucks(the long ones), 5 or 6 boats and numerous other fire and safety vehicles. In addition, park staff was on hand. The two people were fine.

Lake Kegonsa Event, March 27, 2004, meet director Alan H.

We had great weather and a fantastic turnout for this event. About 200 participants tried their luck on the fast Kegonsa map. This was our annual scout score O event, and then our regular club event which was also a score event using the same markers.

The format was you had one hour to find as many markers as you could. There were 18 placed throughout the park. For each full minute late you were penalized 1 point. Each marker was worth one point.

While some were content to go overtime while finding all of the markers, others came back on time in order to snare a higher place in the standings. Michael Eglin completed the course in a speedy 29:33, while kevin was less than 2 minutes back at 31:30. The top female finisher was Irene M. at 39:20 good enough for 3rd place. The course length was 5.8K

As usual we hope everyone had a great time and that we'll see you at future events. Many thanks to Alan H. and John S. for organizing and setting up the 6th annual scout event, as well as the regular event.

Kellings Lakes Event December 7, 2003 meet director Cathy/Lee

Our annual state championship event was a complete success. We had 117 participants and a cool, yet beautiful day. For this event we added a challenging 8K championship course, in addition to our usual short and long courses. Many who thought it would be fun to give it a try paid the price with an overtime or did not finish result. They learned the hard way that only the most skilled orienteers should attempt our championship course!

kevin was able to capture the State Championship with a time of 68 minutes( 8:15min/K) over the rolling Kettle Moraine terrain. Mikhail P. finished second 5 minutes behind.

Many thanks to those who helped make this event possible. New member Michael Eglin, former Swiss junior team member, designed and hung most of the controls. Cathy and Lee ran registration. And Gale, kevin, Michael and a couple of people who's names I don't know helped pick up the controls. Thank you all very much!

Lapham Peak October 4, 2003 meet director kevin

This event featured wonderful sunny and cool day. We had a large turnout and one of the strongest fields in club history. By 12:00pm we already had 50 participants registered! We ended up with 87.

I didn't get much feedback about the courses, but people seemed happy with the courses. I designed a long course with only 7 markers to give competitors more route choice options on a couple of long legs. The short course was on the west side of the park and was very beautiful.

We had a great September day with sunshine and 60 degree weather. Everything seemed to go smoothly and people were having a fun time. Someone moved one of the markers very late in the day which confused the last group. I found the marker hanging on a disc golf post a few hundred yards away. Thanks to Rich and Alan for helping with registration, and Bob for hanging the markers on the east side of the long course.

Bong State Recreation Area, July 19, 2003 meet director kevin

We had a very nice night for this event. It was probably in the 60's once the sun went down. There was a better turnout than usual, and most of the participants said they had fun.

The event took place on a new map that I made this year. In some areas the grass was over people's heads. That made for some slow times on the short courses. It added to the navigation difficulty level, as well. We started the first racers at 9:15pm. By 11:30pm everyone had returned. Charlie beat out Maricel and Alan H. for the State Championship title.

Gov. Nelson State Park, April 12, 2003, meet director Rich J.

The Sandhill Cranes were gliding around Lake Mendota on Saturday, a good omen to all who observed them. We had perfect weather for our second meet of the season. Sunny skies with temperatures in the high 50's welcomed us back to Governor Nelson State Park, a picturesque and nicely varied landscape that we haven't used for several years.

We had a large turnout for the event, with nearly 70 entries. Several new members joined our club, continuing the trend from our last meet at Blue Mound.

We had the standard short and long courses available for the meet. The short course basically toured the pleasant and scenic areas of the park, while the long course covered everything else!

The short course covered a variety of terrain features, guiding the entrants over the highest overlooks in the park, and past the effigy mounds in the southern part of the park. This course also took them out on a peninsula on Lake Mendota - this control was so easily visible and compelling that some of the long course runners nearly punched it by mistake.

The long course started out with a couple 250 meter legs that strongly discouraged a straight line approach, and got the runners thinking. Chaos resulted - parallel errors, map scale disorientation, bypassed catching features - it was like a course setter's dream come true!

Long course runners did get a couple of long trail runs in the middle of the course. The last few controls were pretty much just blood, guts, and glory, as much as route choice or fine navigation skills. I observed this not from a course setting perspective, but by watching the finishers come in!

I was expecting the fastest times to be around 50 - 60 minutes for the courses, but both the short and long courses had some very fast finishers indeed.

This was my first whack at meet direction for the club; I would like to thank Kevin T. for setting me up in this popular venue, with updated maps; Alan H. for assistance with setting up the meet; Bob F. and Lee T. for help with registration and instruction for competitors, and Cathy Y. for compiling the results (and sharing chilled cantaloupe). We also had several people help with the control pickup, thanks to everyone for making this a fun event! - Rich J.

Blue Mound State Park Event, March 29, 2003, meet director Alan H.

This was our annual scout event and opening day for the regular club events. Both events went well. The scout event had a record 143 participants(107 scouts, 36 leaders) and there were 45 competitors for the noon event.

For the first time in the history of the scout event the weather was not unseasonably warm. We faced light snow flurries and below freezing temperatures all day. This did not dampen the spirits of the masses who came. Once again everyone seemed to have a great time.

This event featured the first use of our completed Blue Mound map. Petr Junek did a fantastic job of fieldchecking and drafting. The only sour note is the continued building of single track biking trails that will soon overrun the entire park.

The scout event had 4 teams finding all of the markers in under 60 minutes. The event has been a score event the past 4 years.

The main event featured a long course of 6.7K and a short course of 2.5K. Laura W. smoked the short course in 45.24, while I took 59:05 while picking up the long course controls. The courses had numberous rock features and open or light green forest.

We should all thank Alan H. for designing the courses for both events, and John S. for taking care of many of the details for the scout event(publicity, registration, etc.). Also helping out were Rich J., Bob F. and myself. I hope I didn't miss anyone. And remember, if you want to help out the day of an event, just show up early and ask if we need any help. Or stay late and help pick up controls.

Devil's Lake State Championship Event, Dec 8, 2002, meet director kevin

We had another wonderful day for our state championship event. While temperatures were on the chilly side(high in the low 20's) and the wind was blowing, the sun was also shining brightly all day long. 110 people showed up and I saw a lot of people that were having a good time.

As usual for our state championship event, we set a very challenging long course. The length of 5.3K may sound short, but with the rocky ground and the technical terrain, it was very hard to move fast. The winning time was posted by David R. who said he was the top ranked M35(short course) in England before he left the country. It's always great to get people from other countries showing up for our events. We also had Polish, Latvian and Russian competitors. And perhaps others that I don't know of.

Our defending state champion is Charlie S. who posted the second fastest time, 81:00. He retains the title since there is a Wisconsin residency requirement. Great race and congratulations Charlie!

We only used about 1/3 of the mapped area, since there was gun hunting on the other parts of the map. Though, I didn't hear any shots all day.

The short course(3.6K) featured 3 controls with great views of Devil's Lake and the surrounding area. The course followed a trail up a large valley before following a trail back along the east bluff(about 300 ft above the lake).

Many thanks to all the people who assisted me. Andy and Wayne helped hang the short course. Alan H. ran early to vet the long course and thankfully so. He found a control that had fallen or been moved from it's position. It took him 20 minutes to find it and rehang it. This was taken care of before any other competitors came through. Lee T. helped get the bus of JROTC cadets going. Rich G. picked up the short course controls and the flagging tape we had hung. And finally, Andy and Wayne watched the finish line for me while I picked up the long course controls. Once again, thank you very much. We couldn't have had such a great event without your help!

Lapham Peak Colorama, Oct 5, 2002, meet director Cathy Y.

55 people came out to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. With temperatures in the high 50's and the sun shining, it was a terrific day. Cathy designed a challenging long course, and Bob F. helped with setting it up.

There was no separate short course. People who didn't want to do the whole long course simply found as many markers as they could from the long course markers.

Night Orienteering Event July 13, 2002, meet director kevin

We held the 8th annual night orienteering event this past Saturday night. 12 brave souls ventured into the darkness at Glacial Blue Hills in West Bend, WI. I sent everyone out at 9:30pm for the start of the 1 hour score event. Half an hour later Petr came running through having found all the markers on the north side of the park. Shortly thereafter the rest of the participants lights could be seen approaching in the darkness. Overall, people seemed to have an enjoyable experience.

As usual, the weather was perfect. It was a cloudless starry night with a cresent moon and the planet Venus shining in the western sky. Temperatures were in the 60's.

Glacial Blue Hills Event May 4, 2002, meet director Cathy Y.

We had great weather(70 and sunny), and a nice crowd(65) for our final event of the spring. This event had a twist, too. We took the trails off the map on the second half of the long course. Once again everyone seemed to have a good time, though a couple of people didn't check in at the end of their course. We hope they aren't still out there. : )

One more reminder, you only have 3 hours to complete the course. If you go over that time you are supposed to quit and go to the finish to check out. This is a safety measure, so that we know you aren't hurt or lost in the woods for a long period of time. A few minutes overtime is fine, but after 4 hours we begin to worry.

Ottawa Trails Event April 20, 2002, meet director Bob F.

93 people showed up and tried their luck at streamer O. Both long and short courses were flagged. Participants with unmarked maps had to mark the location of the markers when they found them along the route. We got a few thumbs down on the idea, but overall it seemed people had fun. I know I did.

The courses were tough. There were only 2 perfect scores on both the long and the short courses. It was definitely a challenge of your map reading ability and your patience.

The publicity we got from the park helped us set a new record for attendance. We have already shattered the spring attendance record, and we still have one event left. The weather was cool(50's) and partly sunny.

Indian Lake Event, April 6, 2002, meet director Alan H.

This day we held the 4th annual scout score-O event. We had a great turnout, and as usual, the weather was great. It was about 40 degrees and sunny. I had to leave before the end of the event, so I don't know the results yet. I'll post them when I get that information from the event organisers. A great big thank you to John S. who took care of publicity, registration and also set up some orienteering activities that scouts could do while they waited to begin.

Next year's event will be the last Saturday in March(unless it is Easter again). It will probably be held at Blue Mound State Park.

Thank you for supporting our scout event. By doing so you get the opportunity to orienteer on high quality 5-color orienteering maps at different parks each year. The courses are designed with you in mind by people who have many years of orienteering experience, are ranked nationally and have competed internationally. The maps that you get to use are new or updated before the event. Without your support we would not be able to provide such a high quality experience. Once again, thank you for making this event a success, and I hope we see you next March for #5!

The regular club event also went well. 53 participants tried their luck at either a score-O or an advanced course where we took the fields and trails off the map to make navigation more difficult. Steve L. still completed the 3.4K course in 33 minutes, less than 10 min/K.

Thanks to Alan H. for being meet director on short notice, and Cathy Y. and Lee T. for helping out wherever they were needed.
