Notice how shapes are made by the edges of color meeting another color. In what directions do your eyes follow the curves and colors around the picture? Where do they stop? Why?
Stories about other people's adventures into extreme or unknown territories give explorers some information about what to expect. The Greek epic Odysseus is filled with colorful tales of overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of an overriding goal. In the segment of the story shown here, Odysseus is saying goodbye to Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinoos, who has rescued him and helped him obtain aid from her father to make his way back to his homeland. Odysseus leaves her beautiful land of Phaiacia to sail in the king's ship to Ithaca. Romare Bearden has used exuberant shapes and colors that communicate the emotions of departure-leaving behind and going toward.
