Getting Our Bearings / William Wiley |
Maps are abstract representations of our earth, not the real thing. The artist has taken mapping a step further and created an abstract map from a shape found in nature, an animal hide. Look closely and see if you can discover what "places" are mapped.
Mapping is essential for getting our bearings. In order to navigate into the unknown, it is useful to analyze and synthesize what is known from past experience. By plotting the locations of artists who have influenced him, the artist has "mapped" his memories and created an homage to his mentors.
