Part 1: Questions about the music industry.....
1. In what ways are you involved in the music industry? Right now I am in two bands. My own project called EmSinfonia which is very different from my other band Broken Hope. I also run a 24 track recording facility (Quali-Tone Productions)and produce records and demos on a full time basis.
2. How long have you been doing envolved in the music industry with all this? I have been in the recording industry since 1990.
3. As you take a look at today's metal bands, what do you see? That is tough considering the word "metal" is so vague these days. Once upon a time there was a distinct definition of a metal band, and now there are so many styles. The bad change is that the music has taken a back seat to image. Not to say that image wasn't big before but when you gotta wear paint on your face and fucked up clothes to sell records then it says something about your talent. In metal, there are some bands that I think deserve alot more recognition and are currently getting less attention than the image bands. Hopefully this will change. Let's face reality. You only go as get as big as the person's wallet financing your band.
4. What would be your advice to a band if they were to ask you how to get their name known? Relentless self promotion combined with dedication to your music and the willingness to take criticism from those who you want to listen to it. In my experience I have found that useful criticisms are a great help and the are a key factor in making you work harder. If you want to get known you have to break out of the local scene and be willing to work your name in other markets. It will pay off when you hear someone from another state or country praising your music.
5. What do you consider to be a good quality metal band? I am a bit biased on that . Being a guitar player I like bands with great guitar riffing and solos. I also like bands who take the time to get good enough productions so you can hear all of the instruments. There are many out there that I like.
6. What are YOUR future plans (pertaining to the music industry?) In the future I hope to graduate into the audio for film industry as well as keep my album production career and studio going. I would like to get a studio started on the west coast too. I hate being in one place for too long and this way I could do work in both locations.
7. Any final comments about the industry of music and metal? Always trust your producer....he may be a prick sometimes but he knows what's best. haha
Part 2: questions about Broken Hope
1. How long has Broken Hope been around and who are the current members? Broken Hope has been around since 1988. The current members to date are Myself,Jeremy Wagner, Joe Ptacek, Ryan Stanek, and Shaun Glass.
2. Why do you think Broken Hope has a record contract right now? What it is about Broken Hope that you think got the band the contract? Currently we are negotiating a new contract. The reason we got any contract would be because we constantly promoted and improved our music as well as kept going without jumping onto trends. Most bands break up when they go through what we have been through.
3. In what ways has Broken Hope evolved since the band was formed? We as musicians have improved over the years and are always trying to be better every time we write something. We never settle for less. The next recording will make the last one look weak.
4. Do you think there will be any changes in (or within) the band in the near future? You can expect some changes in the very near future. I can't say much more than that. But I will assure you it will be for the better. Dedication and progression are key factors to any success and when someone is unwilling to do either of those then a replacement is needed.
5. Any future plans as far as tours, new merchandise, ect.? We will be completing another recording by this fall and we will definitely be touring. Right now we are just concentrating on the new record. New merchandise is in the works. In the past we have made very poor decisions on letting others do our merchandise for us and this has become a big hassle with people not getting their orders on time. Now we will be doing it ourselves. I apologize on behalf of the band to all of those who waited too long for their orders.
6. What types of places does Broken Hope like to play at (live)? Of course we love to play in the Chicago area because our local following is amazing. As far as other places go, Texas, Colorado, Florida, New York & California are very strong markets. Canada is always great!! We recently played in Chile with Sodom and it was one of the best crowds ever. They love their metal down there!
8. Any final comments overall? If there are any bands interested in recording in my studio they can reach me at Quali-Tone Productions (847)625-7935 or e-mail masterfader@aol.com. Also I have a web page started that has more info http://members.com/mastrfader/qualitone/ Thanks for the interview!!
