1. FIRST OF ALL, WHO IS THRESHOLD? WHAT IS THE BANDS PURPOSE AND CONCEPT? AND WHAT IS THE BAND'S CREATION STORY?
Wow!! Is the interview over, that's a long one. Anyway Threshold is Shawn, James, And me David on these instruments: Guitar, drums and bass. As far as a concept ahh, uhmm, well you see it sort of like this, we love music and art in general but we are sick to death of all the crap out there so we wanted to give people and ourselves some thing different. At our live shows, time allowing , we try to put on a full blown event real DADA like you know? Now the creation story: IN THE BEGINING(1994) there was four guys who wanted to make music now there are three( two originals) There is a lot to the story and I am not a fast type guy so if any one wants the can contact us and I will send them a copy of our bio.
2. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF THRESHOLD BEING AN INSTRUMENTAL BAND?
Well it's unique, because we can let the music speak for it's self and we are not pinned down to any particular scene. We can run through all the emotions with out having to have a singer that could keep up. ( If one of us could sing we might,and we may in the future, but for now we like it this way.) Of course on the downside you have the marketability factor. Two girls were overheard at our last show saying " What the hell was that?, They didn't even have a singer" but thats how it goes.
3. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THRESHOLD'S MUSIC?
I would say you would have to hear us for your self but if you like anything like out-jazz, prog rock or metal, and anything experimental, and even a balled or two , you might like us. Let me say however the live show is becoming more and more a part of our music.
4. WHAT BANDS AND TYPES OF THINGS INFLUENCE THE MINDS AND MUSIC OF THRESHOLD?
We are inspired by everything we see and hear,but as far as music goes bands and people like Frank Zappa, King Crimson, John Cage, Thought Industry, the Ruins, and more. I guess I am interested in any band artist, or philosopher that pushes the edge a little.
5. ARE THERE ANY THRESHOLD ALBUMS AVAILABLE? WHERE ELSE CAN THRESHOLDS MUSIC BE FOUND?
We have a 6 song tape that is gone but we can make copies, a 2 song disc also gone,but will make copies. A new cd demo 8 songs 5 bucks, also shirts , stickers, coffee mugs(on the way) and we are thinking of doing an order only cd release of our 1st tape ,the 2 song disc, some live stuff, and a few unreleased tracks.
6. HOW DOES THE CURRENT LINE-UP COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL? ANY MEMBER CHANGES?
Well were better now! (j.k.) no really we have had so many changes it sucks but the main difference was in the first line-up we had 2 bass players, now it is just me. There is 3 different line ups that recorded 1. first demo,2. 2song disc, 3. new disc(3 piece).
7. WHEN YOU PLAY SHOWS, DO YOU DO YOUR OWN PROMOTING OR DO YOU HAVE HELP?
WE pretty much do it ourselves, I book all our shows and sometimes some one will help with a flyer or something.
8. AS AN INSTRUMENTAL BAND, HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO NAME YOUR SONGS?
Sometimes I have an idea or image I want to project (The Barstool is a Balance Beam) other times it is just a quirky phrase (Sarcasm is my lover) There are other factors,but I don't want to get in to it.
9.WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THRESHOLD OVER THE NEXT YEAR? 10. WHAT ARE THE OVERALL GOALS FOR THE MEMBERS OF THRESHOLD?
Well, I will answer these two together. Our plans for the next year are 1. to do a tour in Dec. 99 ,2. release more merchandise, 3. do a split cd with great band called Utah! . The goals for the mebers in particular are PARTY PARTY PARTY!!! Okay not really. I can't speak for the other guys but for me it is just to write and release music that I like, along with playing as many shows as possible.
