The basic arm bar is a joint controlling technique against the elbow and is called ude gatami in Japanese (NOTE: Many books use Japanese terminology rather than English. For this reason we provide links from the English terminology in this description to our glossary of Japanese martial arts terms). This is a technique we teach in several of our seminars and workshops (see below) because it is an excellent technique to restrain combative people without having to use restraining devices or strikes. As such, it is a good technique to use in hospitals, schools and clinics. It is also a good technique for police and security personnel to use.
There are many variations of this technique. The pin shown in this picture results from performing an outer arm bar. One way to practice this is off of a straight punch. Block the offending limb with a double or augmented knife hand block and pivot into a back stance. Avoid trying to grab with your hands and avoid trying to push the technique away. Use your stance to move the technique. One way to maintain your center-of-balance is to exhale as you do this technique. This can be a throw or it can be used to escort someone to the ground. To take this to the ground step back and down and you should end up in a pin as pictured.
